FITNESS TESTING of ELITE ATHLETES "Champions aren't made in gyms. Champions are made from something they have deep inside them; a desire, a dream, a vision. They have to have last-minute stamina, they have to be a little faster, they have to have the skill and the will. But the will must be stronger than the skill." Muhammad Ali

This website was established to recognise the many elite athletes who participated in the Fitness-Testing Program and the enthusiastic Senior Sports Science Students of Peakhurst High School who carried out these tests. I doubt there has ever been, or will ever be, such a program run by school students, testing athletes of this calibre.
TV Channels 2, 9 and 10: Besides the many individuals that I have encouraged and motivated to achieve their potential and the many sports teams that I have coached, one of my most memorable achievements was the success of my Fitness-Testing Program on elite athletes which gained enormous popularity and was shown on National TV Channels 2, 9 and 10. I carefully selected and trained a number of very enthusiastic, highly motivated and extremely capable senior students from my Advanced Sports Science and Human Movement Classes in the procedures and techniques of Fitness-Testing. We tested some 80 of Australia's most talented athletes in 18 areas of speed, endurance, agility, flexibility, strength, lung capacity and aerobic endurance. Looking back, it was a great opportunity and wonderful experience. Each student, who helped run the fitness-testing program, must feel very pleased and totally satisfied with their input and effort and I thank them for it. Perhaps, it was through this program, their genuine interest, obvious hard work and my different teaching technique, that these dedicated students, as a class average, achieved 1st Place in NSW in their Year 12 HSC Personal Development, Health and Physical Education. I am very proud of their achievement. Such athletes gave freely of their time and it is encouraging to view the names and performances of these great sports-people.

In 1990, Susie broke the speed record for swimming the English Channel, being the youngest person to cross the Channel at that time. At age 22, Susie was the first person to swim the 180km (112 mile) Florida Straits from Cuba to the United States (12 May 1997). She also swam a record 197 km (122 mile) from Mexico to Cuba, covering the longest distance ever swum without flippers in open sea, in 38 hours and 33 minutes (1 June 1998).

Phil Kearns Such was the impact made by Phil Kearns on the international scene that following his debut against New Zealand in August 1989 he went on to play in the next 45 internationals for Australia. Shortly after this run came to an end he endured a near three year lay off - missing 23 internationals - before returning against England in a crushing 76-0 win in June 1998. He is pictured above during the narrow 12-11 victory against England on 28/11/98.
